Bereka Mosadi to empower young women

26 Feb 2017

Bereka Mosadi Association aims to empower young women and provide them with skills to mould them into strong independent women.

Chairperson of the association, Ms Resego Kgosidintsi told BOPA that the association was formed May last year by a group of University of Botswana students.

She said they had been giving motivational talks and helping girls in different schools around the country.

Ms Kgosidintsi explained that their focus was more on the girl child as they were likely to fall victim to social ills than boys.

She said even though the boy child was at times marginalised, they were better off compared to girls, adding that they do help boys and men, but leaned more towards assisting women and girls.

“Our association was not only inspired by the need to equip the girl child with the right survival skills, but by their vulnerability to various factors. We have witnessed several cases where girls could not afford basics like sanitary pads and even stationery and saw it fit to assist,” she added.

Ms Kgosidintsi said they had events lined up to teach women about their worth.

“We intend to host a women’s summit soon and sensitise them about rape and gender based violence,” she said.

Ms Kgosidintsi said their wish was to eventually build a home-based care facility for women and children fleeing domestic violence and also have a pre-school for children who were from less privileged backgrounds.

Thus, she urged the youth to join hands in fighting gender-based violence and rape. ENDS
