Kang dumping site health hazard - councillor

26 Feb 2017

Councillor for Kang North, Mr Kemmonye Makatane has raised concern about the situation at Kang dumping site, saying the site is full and hence poses a health hazard to the community.

Speaking during the Hukuntsi Sub- district council meeting in Hukuntsi recently, Mr Makatane said the condition of the dumping site put Kang residents especially those with farms near the dumping site at risk of contracting contagious diseases and illness brought about by the unhygienic condition of the dumping site.

He added that the situation did not only affect residents, as livestock was also affected from consuming plastics and other waste material swhich were blown away from the dumping site.

Councillor Makatane cited that although the dumping site was already full, some contractors were adding weight to the already bad situation by depositing waste there.

Mr Makatane declared Kang as a rapidly growing village because of its geographical placement along the Trans Kalahari Highway which is a sole reason which attracted investors to Kang.

He noted that the state of the dumping site might have a negative impact on attracting possible investors to Kang.

In her response, Hukuntsi sub-district council chairperson, Ms Goratwamang Tlhage acknowledged that Macheng dumping sites, Kang included had been poorly maintained during the past period.

Ms Tlhage further said Kang dumping site was rehabilitated in September 2016, adding however that these frequent rehabilitation exercise did not solve the problem because the dumping sites were small and incapacitated to accommodate waste generated in target areas.

She said she was still hoping that Hukuntsi Sub- land Board would facilitate and speed up the allocation of land that could be used as communal dumping sites as a way of remedying the situation faced by Macheng dumping sites. ENDS
