Boakgomo raises bar in farming
20 Feb 2017
Trail left behind by prolonged bouts of drought that also rendered farmers cash strapped has forced farmers to work out other sustainable means to feed livestock, giving credence to the saying; a calm sea does not make a skilled sailor.
Mr Frank Boakgomo of Masoke lands is among scores of farmers who were forced to demonstrate a high degree of competence and innovation during dry spell.
The 63-year-old retiree and integrated farmer says feeding livestock from own pockets proved a difficult undertaking hence started planting Napier grass to supplement feeding regime.
This was after he heard much about the nutritional value attributed to the grass known for its high-protein forage.
He learnt the grass, although best suited to high rainfall areas, was also drought tolerant and grew well in drier areas.
Since acquiring its seedlings about a year ago, Mr Boakgomo affirmed napier grass’s tender, young leaves and steams have proven not only palatable to livestock particularly goats but also facilitate the animals’ fast growth.
With heavy rains experienced lately and resultant natural grass, Mr Boakgomo intends to stock pile napier grass and use during difficult times.
“I also intend to grow enough napier and sell some to fellow farmers,” he said.
A firm believer in supplementary feeding, Mr Boakgomo advice against total dependence on natural grass alone if farmers expect to reap something out of their toil.
Thatwithstanding, Mr Boakgomo has applauded efforts by government through the Ministry of Agricultural Development and Food Security to improve food security.
He singled out subsidiSed livestock feeds and medicine as one area that help produce resilient farmers who can actively participate in economic activities that improve their livelihood.
The recent announcement by government to procure goats from farmers at P900 per animal according to Mr Boakgomo is a step in the right direction and will lure young people to undertake farming. BOPA
