Kgoroba bemoans quality of education

16 Feb 2017

Member of Parliament for Mogoditshane, Mr Sedirwa Kgoroba has asked government to address the declining quality of education and the issue whereby tertiary institutions offer unaccredited courses. Speaking in Parliament on Wednesday, Mr Kgoroba said poor education quality is negatively affecting future of graduates from local tertiary institutions as the private sector has become reluctant to employ them. “Our education system has declined terribly. There are students who have graduated from tertiary institutions with certificates for courses which were not accredited. Their qualifications cannot be recognised internationally, and the private sector is very hesitant to employ them,” the Umbrella for Democratic Change legislator said as he debated the budget speech. Mr Kgoroba asked government to make sure that local tertiary institutions have their entire courses accredited, adding that it was unjust for students to study courses only to find out that the courses were not accredited after graduating. The legislator complained that the quality of education had dropped in Botswana, saying something has to be done about the situation. He expressed concern at how the Target 20 000 programme had unfolded. Mr Kgoroba said while the whole objective of the programme was a short term skills development of skills, he was surprised to find out that more than 1 900 beneficiaries of the programme have been enrolled to study three-year diploma programmes at Limkokwing University.
