Reception classes doing well

15 Feb 2017

Mokgosi III Primary School head, Mrs Kealeboga Dibeela has applauded government for introducing reception classes in primary schools.
Ms Dibeela said the programme, which started two years back in some schools, has been able to prepare pupils mentally and physically, readying them to start the primary school syllabus.
Reception classes are attended by children who are four and half to five years. She said even though they cry on their first days at school and refuse to participate during lessons, with time they eventually adapt to the school environment.
She said teaching pupils who never had exposure to the school environment had never been an easy task.
“I have realised that children easily adapt to the school environment as they have leisure time within their timetable. They usually engage in outdoor activities and this motivates them exceptionally well,” she said.
She said this year they enrolled 84 pupils compared to 94 last year and they have divided them into three classes.
Head of department - infant, Mrs Wendy Lekang said pupils were coping well as they were taught by patient teachers who offered parental love.
She said although during the first days pupils were difficult to manage, she engaged them by playing games, singing or looking at pictures on magazines as a way of practicing how to read and write.
She was optimistic that they would continue to offer the best reception classes as Mokgosi III, citing that because of the good work and cooperation, other schools from Gantsi District and certain institutions have already visited the school to benchmark. ENDS
