Library to benefit Gweta community

14 Feb 2017

Gweta residents have welcomed the community library and cultural centre that was donated to them by Bob and Sarah Foundation from USA,  describing the facility as true blessing.
Mr Owen Eric, a leader of a local drama group also welcomed the gesture saying they used the facility as a source of information and research given that they had access to free Internet since most of their members were not working.
Principal library officer, Ms Luciah Simwanza said the facility was intended to be a community service centre for the purpose of information provision.
Ms Simwanza said it was a central hub where community members met to share information on programmes that addressed some of their needs.
She added that the library offered basic computer training, educational programmes such as helping students with their homework, teaching them how to research as well as storytelling.
The facility also comprises computers, television sets and radio sets and therefore Ms Simwanza encouraged the community as well as students to use it, especially that some were less-privileged.
Further, the facility comprises recreational games such as chess, monopoly, diketo, mhele and morabaraba.
Ms Simwanza said such games would help in removing children from the streets and keeping them busy.
Again she said they also had some talk shows which would further help in character building as well as cookery besides offering activities such as gymnastics and other sporting activities to help people to be active and fit.
She further said even though they offered lots of entertainment, she was concerned that the community did not participate in such recreational activities.
She said there was too much laxity which she described as a big challenge to the officers because it seemed some people were only interested in using free Wi-Fi. They, however continued teaching the community about the facility. ENDS
