Lack of skills explains employment of foreigners at diamond mine

Parliament has been told that the employment of foreigners in the audit department of Debswana was necessitated by a lack of citizens with the requisite skills and experience.
Minister of Infrastructure, Housing and Development, Mr Nonofo Molefhi said this in response to a question in Parliament from the MP for Selebi-Phikwe West, Mr Dithapelo Keorapetse.
Responding on behalf of the Minister of Mineral Resources, Green Technology and Energy Security, Mr Molefhi said “there are two Zambian auditors at Orapa, Letlhakane and Damtshaa Mines and one Zimbabwean auditor in Jwaneng.”
He said the audit services manager – IT post has a Motswana understudy as part of localisation strategy. Mr Molefhi said there are currently no internal localisation candidates for other positions who can take over incumbents within the next two to three years.
“A thorough search has been conducted in the market before but without success. When contracts for the incumbents in Jwaneng and Orapa come to an end, a search will be conducted for qualified citizens,” he said.
MP Keorapetse wanted the minister to explain the employment of foreigners especially Zimbabweans in the audit department of Debswana including managerial level.
He also asked the minister to state the number of foreigners in such positions, their qualifications and positions, level of service and what happened also wanted to know what happened to Batswana understudying for such positions.
Mr Keorapetse also wanted to know whether there were no Batswana with similar qualifications and experience.ENDS
