Initiative delivers 700 houses

12 Feb 2017

President Lt Gen. Dr Seretse Khama Ian Khama has said that government intended to construct 1 000 houses each year for the needy in the next two to three years.
He was speaking at the official handing over of the 700th house under the Presidential Housing Appeal in Hukuntsi.
President Khama said government was hopeful to continue transforming people’s lives through acts of compassion and afford them dignity.
He said provision of shelter to deserving communities would go a long way in strengthening national unity and rescuing them from life’s hardships.
He applauded Batswana and the private sector for their positive response to the appeal since its inception in 2010.
“I am encouraged by individuals, groups and respective companies for their generosity and making it possible to achieve the landmark number of 700 houses to date,” he said.
The gesture he said might seem a simple kind of social responsibility but its effects were deeper in that it developed and fortified the dignity and provided security that in turn instilled a sense of belonging.
He therefore pleaded with all sectors to give to the less privileged members of society in order to enhance their dignity.
He urged the recipient, Ms Gagoipolelwe Molwele to take responsibility and ownership of the house saying it was a value adding gift.
For her part, Ms Molwele applauded government for initiating programmes that empowered the less privileged members of society and ensuring that they led a dignified life.
The area MP Mr Itumeleng Moipisi noted that the housing appeal initiative had brought an end to families’ accommodation woes in Kgalagadi. ENDS
