BCL ex employees occupy mine houses at no cost

12 Feb 2017

The provisional liquidator’s records reflect that BCL ex employees have been allowed to continue to occupy the BCL owned housing for no charge for an initial period of 12 months from the date of liquidation, with a three months’ notice clause.
This was said by the Minister of Infrastructure and Housing Development, Mr Nonofo Molefhi on behalf of the Minister of Mineral Resources, Green Technology and Energy Security in Parliament on Wednesday.
Minister Molefhi said ‘subsidy for educational services for former BCL employees is ongoing.’
He mentioned that among other things, the chamber of mines had been provided with details of the number of employees at the various levels that were terminated so that they could assist with provision of such information to other mines in the region who might be looking for personnel.
Mr Molefhi further said his ministry would ensure greater oversight and would achieve this through MDCB, a commercial company which has been established to have expertise needed to provide strong capacity and competencies to ensure its subsidiaries are provided with a strategic, technical and commercial oversight.
In addition, Minister Molefhi said a total of 6 532 people have lost their jobs from the recent closure of three mines in the country.
Mr Molefhi stated that 5 486 people lost their jobs at BCL, 838 people at Tati Nickle Mine while 208 lost their jobs at Majwe Mining.
The Member of Parliament for Gaborone North, Mr Haskins Nkaigwa had asked the minister to state the number of jobs that had been lost through the closure of BCL, Tati Nickel Mine and Majwe Mining.
Mr Nkaigwa also wanted to know what had been done to assist those who lost their jobs and what strategies are in place to avoid any future sudden close of mines. ENDS
