Parentsteachers raise hands for children

Zoroga Primary School through the Parents Teachers Association has established the after school group study programme for standard 6 and 7 pupils as an effort to strive for academic excellence.

The school head, Ms Jacqueline Chimbise said during an interview that some parents were highly committed on improving students’ performance hence they saw the need to come up with the strategy of grouping standard 6 and 7 students for the after school group study programme.

She said through the programme, they had also appointed youth and some parents who tutor pupils from 5 pm to 6 pm in the evenings. The head teacher noted that they found it important to engage parents to help their children rather than leaving all the responsibility to the teachers.

She added that the  study groups  were meant to help students revise and finish up their home work with the help of parents.

Furthermore, she said the programme which has been running for two years has been able to yield positive result highlighting that in 2012 they obtained 41 per cent ABC, 2013 they improved and got 54 per cent ABC, 2014 they got 57.9 per cent ABC and 2015 they attained an escalation of 62.2 per cent ABC.

She said they realised that the after school study benefitted students as last year they achieved 64.4 per cent.

She nonetheless lamented that they were worried about the increasing drop out of students more especially boys because of their wayward behaviour. She said since 2012 till 2017, their record indicated that 17 boys and one girl left school.

She said they have done campaigns with the support of Tutune Sub-council including their social worker to help parents and students realise the importance of education.

Ms Chimbise encouraged parents to make a habit of visiting their children’s schools often to discuss their performance with teachers and help device ways of assisting them to perform better in their studies. ENDS
