Dikgosi, their deputies, chief’s representatives and dikgosana are ex-officio members of district councils as well as auxiliary committees such as physical planning and VDCs.

Responding to a question in Ntlo ya Dikgosi, Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Ms Botlogile Tshireletso, said ex-officio members of committees were not paid sitting allowances, since they attended these committees by virtue of their offices.

In addition, Ms Tshireletso said government employees did not draw a sitting allowance for being members of boards in other departments so the sitting allowance could not be extended to this category of government employees.

Kgosi Mosadi had wanted to know when the minister would issue a circular to all the councils for payment of sitting allowance for dikgosi, their deputies, chief representatives and dikgosana who attend district councils and the auxiliary committees .

She also wanted to know whether the minister would not consider having the same allowance paid to other board members in other departments or institutions be extended to this category of government employees. BOPA
