Kwerepe warns officers

The Assistant Minister of Presidential Affairs, Governance and Public Administration Mr Thato Kwerepe has told Ntlo ya Dikgosi that action will be taken against an officer who negligently fails to supervise a project as per Section 41 of the Public Service Act No 30 of 2008.

He stated that the supervising officer should have satisfied himself that an employee is sufficient or not discharging the functions of his or her office satisfactorily or to the set performance standards.

The assistant minister said sanctions may include but not limited to demotion, suspension from duty without pay and even dismissal.

However he said the punishment shall not apply if the employee's efficiency is due to infirmity of body or mind.

Mr Kwerepe said such an officer may also be surcharged in accordance with section 43 of the Finance and Audit Act.

Kgosi Galeakanye Modise of Tswapong region had asked the minister to explain why action is not taken against any professional officer who advices or negligently fails to supervise a project at its initial stage or even when realising the negligent defects after project hand over. BOPA
