Botswana least corrupt
26 Jan 2017
Transparency International has rated Botswana as the least corrupt country in Africa as well as among the least corrupt countries in the world.
Transparency International (TI), in its 2016 Corruption Perception Index (CPI), ranked Botswana number 35 out of 176 countries, with an overall score of 60.
The CPI release states that Botswana's standing thus placed it within the top five of all surveyed nations as well as above almost two thirds of the nations of Europe.
Botswana is also ranked 27 out of 167 countries with a score of 7.87 in the latest Global Democracy Index (GDI).
A news release from BGCIS states that this year’s score places Botswana just below Japan (7.99), USA (7.98) and France (7.92) and above 15 European Union member states.
According to the Economist Intelligence Unit, this year’s GDI ranking is, moreover, consistent with the upward trend enjoyed by Botswana since 2008 when the country was ranked 39 in the world with a score of 7.47.
The Democracy Index further breaks down the overall state of each country’s governance according to various categories, with Botswana continuing to obtain near perfect scores for Electoral Process and Pluralism (9.17) and Civil Liberties (9.41).
