Agriculture key to address high rate of poverty

Farmers in Tsetseng village in Takatokwane constituency have been implored to take the agricultural sector seriously in order to reduce abject poverty in their area.
Speaking in an interview, the area agricultural demonstrator, Mr Mompati Siane also encouraged especially young people to utilise agriculture related government initiatives such as ISPAAD and venture into agri-business to make a living rather than loitering the streets.
Mr Siane pointed out that it was regrettable that majority of the youth showed little interest in the agricultural sector just because they had seen their parents going through the hardships of farming, hence opting to settle in urban areas looking for white-collar jobs.
Mr Siane instead encouraged the youth to follow in the foot-steps of their parents citing agriculture as the key to reduce abject poverty.
He said that they should venture into farming as now government has come up with strategies to make the sector more humane and has also helped create a market.
Furthermore, he encouraged farmers to plough legumes as they have a better market and could also do well even on dry seasons.
He also encouraged them to work in clusters as this could assist them share ideas and produce higher yields. BOPA
