JCE results out

The Botswana Examinations Council (BEC) has released the 2016 Junior Certificate Examination (JCE) results.

A press release from BEC indicates that a total of 41 464 candidates wrote the examinations showing a slight decrease in candidature compared to the 2015 cohort of 41 938.

Out of the 41 464 candidates, 20 408 were male candidates and 21 056 were female.

The release also states that the overall performance indicates that 32.54 per cent of candidates have been awarded Grade C or better compared to 33.41 per cent in 2015, which represents an insignificant drop of 0.87 percent.

This year no candidate has satisfied the requirement for the award of a merit compared to one candidate obtaining merit last year.

The release further says 271 candidates were awarded grade A compared to 197 in 2015, which translates to an increase in the percentage of candidates awarded grade A (+0.18 percent). There is an insignificant decrease in the percentage of candidates awarded grade B (-0.37 percent) this year compared to 2015, it states.

The proportion of candidates at grade D decreased by 0.07  percent  while at grade E there has been an increase of 0.74 percent .

Furthermore, the release says  in 2016, 7 105 (17.14 percent ) candidates have failed to obtain an overall qualification grade compared to 6 932 (16.53 percent) in 2015, which is an increase of 0.61 percent, and these were the candidates who had failed to meet the minimum requirement for a grade E and in the report are recorded under grade U.
