15 Jan 2017

Minister of Tertiary Education, Research, Science and Technology, Dr Alfred Madigele, has implored public officers in the Good Hope Sub- district Council (GSDC) to collaborate and pull in one direction, in order to promote service delivery in their constituency despite serving under different government departments.

Addressing heads of departments in Good Hope on December 13, Dr Madigele said it was imperative for public officers to have clear understanding of all government programmes in place so that they were in a better position to coordinate them accurately to improve the lives of constituents.

Dr Madigele, also Mmathethe/Molapowabojang MP, also said the two government structures; local and central, had a mandate to develop and drive the country’s socio-economic and cultural policies and programmes therefore, constituents should not at any given time experience differences of the two tier system.

He emphasised that public officers should familiarise themselves with both the two tier system policies and programmes in place to aid them to provide policies directions to constituents without failure.

He further encouraged them to improve their level of communication and information dissemination given that they should substantiate the quality of information they disseminated through documentation or other means appropriate to the information for the public to make well informed decisions.

On other issues, he challenged heads of departments to formulate innovative ways of reaching out to the youth for them to attend kgotla meetings and other important consultations that served as platform for them to get first-hand information on different programmes intended to uplift their welfare.

In her welcome remarks, deputy district commissioner, Ms Goitseone Nkwe-Tabane, lauded the minister for his visit saying their interaction would allow them to introspect on their daily operations and to work on their weaknesses as well as capitalise on their strengthens to continue serving their constituents diligently.

Ms Nkwe-Tabane also said meetings with the leadership was vital because they shared with them proper information regarding hitches in the constituency and would be able to give concrete responses to their constituents’ complaints.

She further highlighted some of the challenges they were grappling with in the constituency which included water shortage, non-compliance by poverty eradication beneficiaries, poor performance in schools, inappropriate documentation of government programmes and other important information, shortage of accommodation for public officers and ESP project delays in the constituency.
