Rains cause havoc in Moshupa

08 Jan 2017

Just as Moshupa residents are recovering from the shock of the collapse of Hatsalatladi River bridge that took place a few weeks back, yet another catastrophe has hit the village as Mosope River bridge on the A10 Road collapsed on Saturday.

According to Moshupa Police' Superitendent Oteng Ngada, they received a report of the collapse of the bridge, which is a few kilometres away from Hatsalatladi bridge, around 2pm on Saturday. Upon arrival at the scene the police say they discovered that the bridge had been washed away. It is suspected that the incident could have been caused by the heavy flow of water from the overflowing Mosope River.

“Fortunate enough, no one incurred an accident because we had already closed the part of the road leading to Hatsalatladi River bridge because we were concerned about the safety of the road users.

We are currently engaging the roads department and the contractors to assist,” Superintendent Ngada said.

The public is notified that as a precautionary measure, Pilane Road, on which Mosope bridge is, has been closed.

The public is advised to use Mogapi and Maunatlala as alternative routes for entering and leaving Moshupa.

For his part, Assistant district commissioner for Moshupa Sub-district, Mr Tshepho Kgotso requested that during Pilane Road closure, heavy vehicles such as trucks use Mogobane-Ranaka road.

He also told BOPA that five houses had been heavily affected by the flood, which damaged household items, furniture and appliances such as fridges and also killed chickens.

"We have managed to secure accommodation for two families from their relatives while the third is accommodated at Kgabophuti Primary School. We are organising groceries for the affected families,” , he said, pleading with the public to exercise compassion and lend a helping hand in whatever way possible.

Mr Kgotso also asked the general public to refrain from taking pictures along the A10 Road because it is risky to be close to the collapsed bridge as the impact of the collapse is not yet known. ENDS
