Pilane encourages beneficiaries to re-pay YDF loans
08 Jan 2017
A 24 year old cattle breeder and entrepreneur Mr Keorapetse Pilane has implored fellow Youth Development Fund beneficiaries to honour the agreement with government and make arrangements to re-pay YDF loans so that the money can be re-invested and assist other youth applicants.
Mr Pilane was funded to the tune of P100 000 by the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Culture Development, under the programme of Youth Development Fund, to start a business in cattle breeding in 2013.
Speaking during an interview with BOPA, Mr Pilane stated that his business has grown tremendously, surviving the recent drought and animal disease outbreaks.
He convincingly informed that the business is in good state to re-pay the 50 per cent loan due next year to the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Culture as per the agreement.
“Initially I had bought 17 cattle and I’m proud to tell you that I own 25 cattle as we speak. My premier plan is to breed again this year so that next year when I make the first sale, I can then pay back the YDF loan at once, not in instalments. I’m definite that it’s achievable judging by the month progress in my business,” he said.
The youthful entrepreneur said he keeps monthly records of the progress of the business and works closely with the youth officers in his area and the veterinary officials.
“Every month I submit records to the youth officer. I have also attended workshops held by the veterinary. I have learnt a lot about cattle breeding, cattle diseases and vaccinations as well as production of animal feeds.” Mr Pilane affirmed, further stating that he has managed to keep his dream alive with support from his family.
He said he was inspired by the fact that he grew up in a family of farmers therefore he had some experience, determination and passion for the business.
Mr Pilane also highlighted that he breeds to sell to butcheries, individuals, Botswana Meat Commission and to close the gap by selling to other newly funded beneficiaries.
“I know it’s a hustle to get cattle when one is newly funded, so I want to tap on that market,” he added.
Not disputing that business has challenges, Mr Pilane urged fellow youths to soldier-on and strive for success. For those who aspire to start businesses, Mr Pilane encouraged them to make use of government programmes such as YDF and desist from alcohol and drug abuse.
“The youth must cultivate within themselves, the spirit of entrepreneurship, self-empowerment and development”, Mr Pilane concluded.ENDS
