MP criticises vandalism of govt property

29 Dec 2016

Member of Parliament for Maun East, Mr Kosta Markus has appealed to parents to warn their children to desist from vandalising school property.
He said vandalism was worrisome, especially when students completed their terms because they became unruly, hence damaging properties and urged parents to take the leadership role in ensuring that they raise disciplined children who understood the importance of education.
He made the plea during a kgotla meeting emphasising the need to look after the newly Maitlamo Junior Secondary School to maintain its beauty and status to ensure it accommodated the next generation.
He highlighted that indiscipline, drug and alcohol consumption had been identified as some of the challenges that drove students to practice vandalism. Mr Markus cited one drug dubbed ‘katse’ which he said was commonly used by students.
He said the drug had destroyed many students and appealed to parents to provide parental guidance and instill the spirit of botho amongst their children.
He further stated that social ills ravaging schools would breed a generation of irresponsible citizens if parents failed to act on time.
He said indiscipline also contributed negatively to the schools performance.
Meanwhile, in an interview, Maitlamo school head, Mr Peter Mafokate described the school as a state of art institution in the North West region, noting discipline has become the order of the day at the school and all embraced it to ensure they maintained good status of the school.
He said since the school opened its doors in May this year, they had not experienced any incidents of indiscipline amongst students, saying that he was convinced that the pupils would made them proud if they could continue with the spirit.
For their part, residents welcomed the new school and praised government for responding positively to their plea.  They had long requested for a junior school as their children were travelling long distances to other schools such as Tsodilo and Sedie junior secondary schools respectively.
They also complained about shortage of classrooms at Disana primary school, noting that pupils were taught in open areas which they said it was not healthy during rainy and windy season.
On other issues, residents were informed that each constituency would be allocated P10 million for implementation of community projects. ENDS
