Hailstorm ruins Christmas for Kgomokasitwa
29 Dec 2016
A hailstorm that swept through most parts of the Southern District recently left a trail of destruction and denied victims merriment during the festive season.
In Kgomokasitwa, six homes and the village’s primary school were affected by a combination of heavy down pours and tornado blustering from the northern to the southern direction that left structures unroofed.
One of the victims Ms Keneilwe Obane said the hailstorm started when they were inside the affected house at around 3pm.
She said the wall fell on them and they were rushed to the village clinic where they were treated for minor injuries and discharged.
Ms Obane said some of the damaged items included grocery as well as books for schooling children.
Mr Ophana Kgosiemang’s sitting lounge was left in the open in which the rain tampered with electricity.
No injuries were sustained at Mr Kgosiemang’s home.
Moshupa’s acting deputy district commissioner, Mr Tshepho Kgotso said they were working around the clock to normalise the situation, therefore he urged Batswana to exercise honesty when reporting damage caused by natural disasters and urged people not to destroy evidence of such items.
Mr Kgotso said a joint operation of District Disaster Management Committee of Moshupa, community leadership and National Disaster Management Office will in due cause wind-up assessment and assist affected families appropriately.
Mr Kgotso challenged landlords to visit their homes after receiving reports of tornado damage to enable relevant authorities to quantify the damage and see how best they can assist victims.
The district commissioner’s office in Moshupa had on Tuesday visited affected families in Kgomokasitwa to get first-hand information on how best to assist the victims. ENDS
