Assessment done on Khakhea damaged houses

19 Dec 2016

The Minister of Transport and Communications, Mr Kitso Mokaila, says an assessment was done in 2012 on houses and property damaged in Khakhea during construction of the Sekoma- Kokotsha road.

Although he stated that report from the assessment was not for public consumption, the minister explained in Parliament that 62 properties were assessed for damage.

He explained that a kgotla meeting was held in 2013 by the Roads Department and District Commissioner where findings of the assessment were made to affected people.

“The names of affected persons were read out at the Kgotla meeting and those not present were invited to come for their compensation offers at the Mabutsane Roads Department office.

Forty-one individuals who responded positively to the offers received compensation. Ten have declined the compensation offer citing that the compensation was not adequate,” Mr Mokaila explained on Thursday (December 15).

He said those who declined compensation were advised to engage private valuers to substantiate their claims and the ministry was still waiting for the responses.

Jwaneng- Mabutsane MP Mr Shawn Ntlhaile had asked the minister to state when the assessment report would be released, and whether residents would be consulted during determination of their compensation. ENDS
