Botswana supports efforts for peace in Syria
13 Dec 2016
The government of Botswana has consistently been advocating for a prompt and amicable solution to the protracted conflict in Syria, which to-date has led to a humanitarian catastrophe in that country.
A press release from the Ministry of International Affairs and Cooperation states that Botswana will always render its unequivocal support for the United Nations efforts aimed at finding a durable political solution to the Syrian crisis.
It notes that to this end Botswana is pleased to vote in favour of the Resolution brought before the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on December 9, 2016.
The statement says the resolution, which demanded an immediate cessation of hostilities in Syria and humanitarian aid access throughout the country, had been vetoed by China and Russia at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
It notes that it is regrettable when members of the UNSC exercise their veto power to counter resolutions which are intended to address humanitarian crisis situations.
The statement further says following the adoption of the Resolution on Syria by the UNGA, the government of Botswana urges the international community to show consistency by calling for the much needed ceasefire in Yemen where atrocities are being carried out by the Saudi-led coalition, which is also unfortunately supported by some of the conflicted Permanent Members of the UNSC.
