Churches should embrace road safety issues

The ambassador of road safety issues, Mr Maatla Otsogile encourages Christians and churches to be more involved in advocating for road safety.
Speaking at the road safety conference held by the Intercollege Christian Movement of Botswana (ICMB) in Serowe on December 5, Mr Otsogile said churches should include road safety in their sermons because it would reach many ears as there was a large number of people attending churches.
If pastors and ministers could teach their congregation about road safety issues, he said a large segment of the population would be reached.
He said Christians could make a difference as both individuals and organisations, if they could extend the similar morality preached at their respective churches to road users.
“Patience, love and self-control are some of the principles taught in churches which are needed by road users,” he said.
Mr Otsogile advised families to go in separate cars during the festive season when travelling long distances to avoid instances where the whole family perishes in a car accident.
Public education officer for Motor Vehicle Fund (MVA), Mr Emmanuel Mosinki said their vision is to have halved the number of car accidents encountered in the year 2011 by the year 2020, but they are failing as statistics show otherwise.
Mr Mosinki stated that the fund uses a lot of money on road accident victims which could have been used to improve livelihoods.
Also, he said future leaders are lost in these accidents.
He advised Christians to ensure that there is someone who does a quality check on vehicles for road worthiness when embarking on long trips during their holidays.
The coordinator for ICMB, Mr. Otlaadisa Jacob Ramothudi encouraged Christians to be actively involved in spreading the road safety message because they are equally affected as a lot of accidents happens during Christmas holidays. ENDS
