Kweneng cllrs express mixed views over voting machine
08 Dec 2016
Kweneng District councillors have expressed mixed reactions over introduction of the electronic voting machine (EVM) to be used in the 2019 general elections.
Responding to presentation made by the EVM coordinator, Mr Gabriel Seeletso, some councillors expressed disappointment over the decision to revise the Electoral Act when stakeholder views were not heard.
Cllr Ofentse Mareme of Gabane alleged that the electronic voting device had room for cheating because it did not provide paper trail that could be used for verification purposes.
The same sentiment was echoed by Borakalalo councillor, Mr Arafat Khan, who said the amendment of the Electoral Act was never communicated, but was imposed.
Councillor Tlotlo Batlhophi of Dutlwe/Takatokwane council wards called on councillors to put aside fear and doubts over the new developments and embrace change in supporting the initiative.
Meanwhile Thamaga North councillor, Mr Palelo Motaosane dismissed arguments that consultation was never made, stating that the amendment of the law was based on recommendations made on views solicited from consultation processes from various stakeholders.
Mr Seeletso called on councillors to remain calm and trust the system the way they did with electronic devices such as their cellular phones for accuracy of information adding that moving to the impending arrangement was based on previous consultations with relevant stakeholders.
He, however, could not dispute the fact that use of the devices might encounter problems since it would be operated by human beings but assured the council meeting contingency measures that will be put in place to ensure that the captured information was not affected.
Mr Seeletso further insisted that there was no reason for individuals to be on panic mode adding that print out would always be availed at counting centers for verification purposes and be able to respond to queries.
He said contrary to the previous P90 million used for the elections’ day the estimated budget for the coming elections stood at P145 million that will include purchasing of machines and training processes. ENDS
