GetBucks gears Kubung Primary to host cricket games

07 Dec 2016

GetBucks Botswana, a financial lending institution has given Kubung Primary School a lease of life to hold regional cricket tournaments and perhaps become a centre of excellence.

GetBucks paved way for this envisioned future recently when they donated full cricket equipment to the school comprising of bats, helmets, pads, balls and a wicket among others.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, GetBucks Botswana managing director, Marthin De Kock said with the equipment, the school could make excellent networking opportunities.

He also said his company will provide sport facilities the school needs while theirs will be to put some hard work to grow their talents.

De Kock further emphasised that nothing will give him pleasure than to one day watch a child from Kubung excel in sport.

Furthermore, he said growing up in South Africa where cricket is part of the backbone of his culture, the sport continues to stimulate and excite him even though he chose a different path, that of business.

The managing director also narrated an inspiring story of a young man who grew up in a rural village of Ndingi in South Africa which is similar to Kubung but the young man later became a renowned cricket player of international repute.

He said Makhaya Ntini’s life was so hard that he never had shoes to wear for most of his childhood.  His talent was discovered by a cricket development officer during a mini-cricket programme when he was 15 years old.

Ntini was encouraged to develop his skills and he later went on to become the first black player to represent South Africa in cricket.

He also went on to become one of the fastest bowlers with international recognition.

With this inspirational story, De Kock therefore encouraged pupils to draw lessons from it and note that “the future is how you want it to be, and how you make it.”

Besides the cricket equipment, GetBucks also donated textbooks and learning materials as well as chess boards.

He however highlighted that their partnership with the school was long-term, adding that, “Through collaborative efforts with the school management, the students and the parents we should be able to continuously add value, enhance and improve for the sake of our future leaders.”

Kgosi Boitshwarelo Mabutlwane of Kubung expressed his appreciation and thanked GetBucks for investing resources into the future of his community saying “It takes a village to raise a child.”

The school head Ms Albertina Legakwa thanked the company for their continuous support stating that the company was indeed contributing to the future of the children.

Teachers at the school could not thank the company enough stating that since their involvement with the school, there has been a remarkable difference.

The teachers said that they were adamant that the school performance will improve significantly in time.

In 2015, GetBucks adopted Kubung Primary school through the government’s Adopt- A- School program.

To date, it has donated uniforms, jerseys, drymacs and shoes to the students as well as a water project and garden tools. ENDS
