Fighters top after beating Sharps

05 Dec 2016

Mogoditshane Fighters climbed Debswana First Division South league log after overpowering Sharps 2-0 in Mogoditshane on Saturday (December 3).

Substitute, Gobe Maphane, opened the scoring sheet with a volley in the 73rd-minute while Mothusi Maika drilled in the second goal six minutes from time to end Sharps’ seven match unbeaten start to the campaign.

The win continued Fighters’ good run that included five victories and a draw from their last six matches.

The Samba Boys have amassed a total of 17 points from eight matches played so far this season.

The two teams played attacking football without testing the respective goalkeepers in the first half.  Sharps created a host of half chances from crosses sent in by wingers Letlhogonolo Chenjela and Bonolo Majoni which were not put to good use by strikers Ofentse Chitutu and Nqobani Pakathi.

Thuso Keraetswe almost put the hosts in front in the 39th-minute but his low shot was brilliantly pushed away by Sharps goalkeeper Richard Musheke.

Musheke then dived low to save a weak penalty kick from Othusitse Kedisitse five minutes into the second half after substitute Maphane was brought down inside the box by Maitseo Dimbo.

The hosts dominating the match afterwards and Maphane volleyed in a lose ball to give them the lead after Sharps defence failed to clear their lines.

Modibedi Motlhamme shot wide in a rare Sharps attack, before Maika doubled the lead with a powerful finish after another sloppy piece of defending.

Maphane then fired wide after running onto a through ball while Gaofenngwe Khubalo shot straight at the goalkeeper as Fighters created a flurry of late chances.

Fighters head coach, Letang Kgengwenyane expressed satisfaction at the way his team is playing at the moment.

“Everything is going according to plan.

We approach matches with two plans, to play creative football and to play power play as well.

The good thing is that both plans are working for us.

This team (Sharps) had planned well for us and we were forced to resort to power play and managed to score two goals,” Kgengwenyane said in a post-match interview.

Sharps coach, Wilfred Mahaja said their plan to score an early goal was ruined when his team missed chances in the first half.

“We lost the game in the first half we missed a lot of chances. After we missed our chances the opponents got chances and buried them.

If we had utilised all our chances in the first half, we could have won the game. But, this is the game of football you win some and lose some,” Mahaja said.

Other Saturday results: Prisons XI 1-1 Notwane, Modipane United 1-0 Letlapeng, Mochudi Rovers 1-1 Skoon Boys. ENDS
