Gaborone United humble Mochudi Centre Chiefs

04 Dec 2016

Fresh from a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Security Systems last weekend, Gaborone United redeemed their pride by beating Mochudi Centre Chiefs 2-0 in a BTC Premiership encounter played at the National Stadium on Saturday (December 3).

Despite not doing very well in the league currently, Centre Chiefs shocked the football fraternity last week by beating high riding, Township Rollers 3-2.

Football pundits had thought it was the resurrection of Magosi and they had gone back to their winning ways, but that was not to be.

However, GU proved that Chiefs’ win was by sheer luck and therefore, they need to work extra hard both in their board room and on the field.

Having played eight games, winning only two, drawing three and losing three, the team’s coach Bongani Mafu is a worried man.

Mafu said in an interview after the game that the results were disappointing particularly that they were coming from a good win against Township Rollers.

“For me, it is a win I could call a poisoned chalice because after that win we didn’t really enjoy it for many reasons, and as a coach I feel very down about the results, I think we could have done better,” he said.

The disappointed Mafu said during the game the players did not come to the party as they gave the opponents more room to manoeuvre.

“I also think the whole system at Centre Chiefs didn’t came to the party and we should start to introspect, starting with me as a coach, but mostly importantly the system. I think the whole system is not geared for success at Mochudi Centre Chiefs at the moment as there are a lot of things that are happening,”he said.

GU, which is also blowing hot and cold have played nine, lost three, won three and drew three. However, coach Rodolph Zapata said he was happy with his players’ performance and their display on the day .

He said they dominated the entire game. He however said his main worry was the fact that the players create a lot of scoring opportunities but failed to convert them.

In other games played on Saturday, Township Rollers and Miscellaneous played to a goalless draw in a game played at Botswana Police College while at Serowe Sport Complex, Green Lovers and Black Forest failed to produce a winner as they played 0-0.

In Maun, Mahalapye United Hotspurs managed to earn three valuable points after beating host Sankoyo Bush Bucks 1-0. In Jwaneng, new comers Security Systems lost 3-2 to Jwaneng Galaxy while Nico United and Orapa United played to a goalless draw. ENDS
