No plans to upgrade internal roads - Van der Westhuizen

01 Dec 2016

Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr Frans Van Der Westhuizen has said there are no plans to upgrade roads at Phase IV, Tawana, Ledumang, Marang and Blocks six, seven, and eight.

He told Parliament that he was aware that the low cost areas have no tarred roads, but due to budgetary constraints his ministry was unable to upgrade the roads, and in addition they could not be included under NDP 11 ceiling due to lack of funds.

He however said Gaborone City Council will continue to incrementally pave roads in the areas using interlocking bricks and funding from the recurrent budget.

Mr Van Der Westhuizen further said he was aware that it was not desirable to have dusty roads in residential areas.

Gaborone North MP, Mr Haskins Nkaigwa had asked the minister as to when the roads in the Self Help Housing Agency and Botswana Housing Corporation low cost areas like Tawana, Ledumang, Marang, Block 8 and Tsholofelo would be tarred; if he was aware that the residents of these areas have been living in such dusty roads for the past 30 years what plans were in place to tar these roads; and, if it was

acceptable to still have dusty roads in the capital city after 50 years of independence. ENDS
