Schoolhead decries dilapidated school structures

30 Nov 2016

The schoolhead for Maboane Primary School, Ms Betty Nkwe said the dilapidated buildings and facilities at her school put the physical lives and health of both studnets and teachers at risk.

Ms Nkwe said this during a tour of the school by the chairperson of the Letlhakeng Sub-council, Mr Tlotlo Batlhophi meant to appreciate the situation after Kgosi Kaisara Phuthego of Maboane complained about the structures during the chairman’s kgotla meeting in the village recently.

Ms Nkwe said that even though there had been some efforts by government to refurbish parts of the school, the situation needed more attention especially the toilets, classrooms, teacher’s quarters, the administration block and standpipes.

“We are facing a serious problem, classrooms are not enough and the drainage system has blocked forcing us to resort to pit latrines but it has since not help in any way as all pit latrines are over spilling,” she said.

Ms Nkwe pleaded with the authorities to attend to the situation as soon as possible as it had the potential to affect the school’s academic performance.

For his part, Mr Batlhophi said even though the situation was bad, shortage of funds may make it difficult for the situation to be rectified soon.

He said the sub-council recently refurbished Moshaweng Primary School, which was in an even worse state, something he said drained the coffers.

He however, promised to engage the relevant authorities to see what could be done. ENDS
