29 Nov 2016
Gaborone City Council will replace the existing high pressure sodium streetlights with energy efficient light emitting diode streetlights.
The project would be carried out through a public, private partnership, Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Ms Botlogile Tshireletso informed Parliament.
Ms Tshireletso explained that over P12.2 million has been budgeted for street lighting this financial year in the capital city.
“The project will include complete refurbishment of non-functional streetlights and a ten year maintenance contract,” she said.
The assistant minister said she was aware of cable theft incidents that caused darkness in parts of Block 10 and Tsholofelo extension.
She said the maintenance of streetlights in Tawana and Extension 31 have been completed.
She added that routine maintenance was being provided at other areas of Gaborone North such as Ledumang, Marang and Block 8.
The Member of Parliament for Gaborone North, Mr Haskings Nkaigwa had wanted to know what the ministry was doing to address the problem of street lighting in Gaborone, and if the ministry was aware that residents of Block 10, Tawana, Ledumang, Tsholofelo, Block 8, Marang and the whole city have been living in darkness with dysfunctional street lighting.ENDS
