Residents reject proposal
28 Nov 2016
Residents of Takatokwane and Maboane in the Letlhakeng Sub -district have rejected the proposed cemetery and crematorium regulations that propose that the Sub district council takes control of all the cemeteries in areas under its jurisdiction.
The regulation was presented to the residents by the Letlhakeng Sub council chairperson, Mr Tlotlo Batlhophi during kgotla meetings he addressed across the Sub district.
Councillor Batlhophi explained to residents that if the proposal could pass into a by-law, it would among others, help bar criminal activities that sometimes occur at cemeteries such as vandalism.
Residents of Takatokwane however, indicted that such a by-law was unnecessary as they were still capable to manage their cemeteries without the Sub council’s assistance.
One of the residents, Mr Gaongalelwe Batlhophi said they had not encountered any problems in managing the cemetery all the years, therefore they did not find any reason to be suddenly relinquished of the responsibility by the Sub council.
Other residents indicated concern over slow service delivery by officers and feared that the services at the cemetery would also be unsatisfactory if it was transferred from residents to the Sub council.
At the nearby Maboane village, residents also raised their concern at the by-law.
For his part, Kgosi Kaisara Phuthego of Maboane also complained that it was like bogosi was being undermined and felt that they should have been consulted before the proposal could be taken to the Sub council.
He also indicated that as residents had rejected the proposal, it will be difficult for them as bogosi to convience them otherwise.ENDS
