Station commander of Mahalapye police, Superintendent Isaac Mamadi, has advised parents and teachers to keep a close eye on their children especially now that it has started raining to prevent drowning cases.
Superintendent Mamadi said in an interview that parents should warn their children against playing anywhere near the river or any water catchment areas, adding that the river was currently flooding.
He said they often recorded cases of people especially school children drowning in the river during the rainy season.
“Teachers should also advice students to go straight home after school and avoid making unnecessary stops that could endanger their lives”, he stated.
Furthermore, Superintendent Mamadi complained of the rising cases of stock theft, mainly goats in the area especially for farmers who leave their livestock at the cattle post and stay in the village, urging people to take care of their belongings to avoid such cases.
“This month alone we have registered four cases of stock theft in which 23 goats worth over P17 000 were stolen”, he said.
Superintendent Mamadi explained that they have already recovered two goats which were unfortunately killed and detained two suspects to help them with investigations.
He said the police also recently intercepted a car carrying seven goats.
“We followed the car and the suspects eventually dumped it at Otse and out-ran the police, they are still at large and the goats have been returned to their owner,” he said.
Lastly, Superintendent Mamadi advised members of the public to be extra cautious and take care of their belongings as the festive season is approaching, warning that criminals were roaming the streets.
He added that they as the police have also been patrolling the streets and busy places for the 60 day activism against crime. BOPA
