Women footballers await payments

Botswana National Sports Commission (BNSC) and Botswana Football Association (BFA) are pointing fingers at each other over delay in payment of appearance fees and allowances for senior women national team players.

The team competed in the CAF African Women's Championships qualifiers in April and were beaten 5-0 on aggregate by South Africa.

The players are owed P7 000 in appearance fees from those two matches and allowances amounting to P6 000 from January to April.

BNSC chief executive officer, Falcon Sedimo, said in an interview that there was process to be followed before they could make a payment.

He said BFA had to submit request to his office to make a payment.

“As you might be aware there must be supporting documents and for a transaction to take place, one has to request. So if there is no requisition it is very difficult for us to make the payment,” Sedimo said on Monday.

However, BFA public relations officer, Tumo Mpatane, said his organisation had paid the players’ living allowance for the days they were in camp.

“If you would recall, sometime back there was an arrangement made by BNSC through the ministry that when the senior national team is in camp they should be given stipend allowance by BFA. Within the SADC area they get US$20 while rest of the the continent and the world they get $30 per day, so as BFA we have paid our dues to the players,” Mpatane said.

Mpatane said the money, which was owed to the players should come from BNSC, adding that they made a follow up with the BNSC regarding the payment last week but still the players were not paid.

Mpatane said BFA would continue to make efforts to follow up on the payment. BOPA
