Houses nearing end of economic use
15 Nov 2016
Minister of Infrastructure and Housing Development, Mr Nonofo Molefhi says his ministry is aware that houses in EU1 at Jwaneng are not electrified and that the houses in question are very small, old and of outdated designs and nearing the end of their economic use although situated in a very prime location of the town
Mr Molefhi said there were 180 units in total leased to various entities at monthly rentals of P174.
He said that there were no plans to upgrade these units in their current state as it was no longer cost effective to upgrade them, adding that the corporation intended to redevelop the whole plot with a view to maximising its potential in terms of the quality of the development and the additional number of Batswana the site could accommodate.
He said consultations were ongoing with the tenants and other stakeholders especially Jwaneng Town Council for relocation of the tenants, noting that a maximum of five years was envisaged before the matter is concluded.
MP for Jwaneng-Mabutsane, Mr Shawn Ntlhaile had asked the minister if he was aware that the BHC low cost houses in a high density area known as Samaphaletshe in EU1 at Jwaneng which were leased to Jwaneng Town Council were not electrified and what actions was being taken to electrify them and if there were any plans to upgrade them.
