Speaking at the launch in Gaborone on November 12, the coordinator for people living with disability in the Office of President, Mr Thomas Motingwa applauded DCEC for the effort in giving visually impaired people an opportunity to engage in the fight against corruption through the braille booklet.
“The launch of the braille booklet is among other things aimed at equipping the visually impaired with necessary knowledge as well as inculcating and entrenching a sense of patriotism among them,” he said.
Mr Motingwa noted that knowledge was indeed a key component in the fight against corruption, citing that it played an important role in all spheres of human life.
“It is evident so far that the DCEC has taken the step in the right direction of which it is my expectation that they will in future consider transcribing more of their publications into Braille so that the visually impaired could benefit,” he said.
For his part, Mr Eugene Wasetso of DCEC said the braille booklet seeks to engage meaningfully with the visually impaired, by packaging anti-corruption messages in a form that will be accessible to them.
“This is the first step towards building a strong partnership with them. We are here to empower young men and women whom we believe will take the anti-corruption war to another level,” he said.
Mr Wasetso also highlighted that the launch of the booklet reflected the commitment by DCEC to a strong and enduring partnership with the visually impaired community.
In his remarks, representatives of Botswana Association of the Blind and Partially Sighted Mr Tshepo Raditlali commended the efforts of DCEC for transcribing their booklet into Braille to cater for them.
He said communication was very important as they will acquire important information on fighting corruption and knowledge which will keep them safe and free from crime at all times.
The booklet has been produced in both Setswana and English to be accessible to the visually impaired community in both languages. ENDS
