Lions club honours Khama

Lions Club International on Tuesday (November 8), bestowed two awards on President Lt Gen. Dr Seretse Khama Ian Khama for his “outstanding humanitarian services.”
Accepting the award from members of Botswana Lion’s Club, Ms Gladys Kokorwe and Ms Tshidi Serema, representing the Lions Club International, President Khama thanked the Lions Club International for recognising his efforts.
President Khama said he was humbled that the association recommended him to be nominated for the prestigious awards.
“It is indeed a motivation to continue the good work,” he said.
Of the two awards, the Lions Club’s International President Medal is given to outstanding leaders in recognition of their humanitarian services, while the Medal of Merit is given to leaders who have demonstrated support to charity and accommodating the club in their country.
Bestowing the medal and badges on President Khama, Ms Kokorwe said he was recognised for his charitable personality.
“He is a person of charity, he visits people and the world sees that,” she said.
Ms Kokorwe said District 412, which comprises of Botswana, Zimbabwe, Malawi and Mozambique lion clubs agreed to grace President Khama in recognition of his work in humanitarian services.
She said for that reason he was commended for compassion and commitment to uplifting society members, as well as addressing the challenges that bedeviled communities.
Ms Kokorwe said Lions Club International marvelled at the fact that President Khama mingled with ordinary people and decided that the awards belonged to him.
She said the Botswana Lions Club was delighted that their President was acknowledged, especially that his recognition went beyond Africa. ENDS
