08 Nov 2016

The Ministry of Tertiary Education, Research, Science and Technology has taken a decision not to sponsor students for some academic programmes for the 2016/17 academic year.

This was said by Tertiary Education, Research, Science and Technology assistant minister, Mr Fidelis Molao, when responding to a question in Parliament from Selebi Phikwe West MP, Mr Dithapelo Keorapetse.

These programmes, Mr Molao said were as follows; Diploma in Adult Education, BED Primary/Secondary Education, BED Adult Education, BSC Information Technology and Bachelor of Arts (Humanities), Bachelor of Chinese Studies, Bachelor of Arts in

Pastoral Studies, Diploma in Library and Information Studies, Diploma in Population Studies, Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences and Bachelor of Economics.

“These programmes are guided by Human Resource Development Council as per their organisational mandate, and we await their guidance for future programmes. In addition, Ministry does not sponsor certificate programmes,” he added.
The restriction that has been imposed, assistant minister said applied to both public and private tertiary institutions. As a result, he said no new students had been sponsored in these areas irrespective of whether the institutions were public or private.

Mr Keorapetse had asked Mr Molao to state academic programmes government had decided not to sponsor for this academic year and in future at public and private tertiary institutions.

Selebi Phikwe West MP also wanted to know if these were certificate, diploma or degree qualifications and whether there were programmes not supported at public institutions, but sponsored at private institutions and vice versa. ENDS
