Poor roads impede commercial activities in Kanye

06 Nov 2016

Minister of Transport and Communications, Mr Kitso Mokaila, is aware that commercial activities in south western part of the Kanye South constituency are impeded by poor condition of roads.

Answering a question in Parliament asked by MP for Kanye South, Mr Abram Kesupile, Minister Mokaila said in order to address this problem, roads in the area were being maintained.

He said Selokolela, through Gasita to Lorolwane, had two dry grading contractors, Section A and B.

The projects commenced in September and October 2016 respectively and would run for a period of 12 months.

On one hand, Sesung/Moatle road was graded by in-house team once a quarter and it was last graded on October 18, 2016. Mosepele-Seherelela-Tsonyane is also graded by an in-house team once a quarter.

The road was scheduled to be graded starting from November 7, 2016.

Meanwhile, Minister Mokaila said roads leading to Tsonyane are maintained as above, while the road from Mokhomma to Tsonyane (34km) which passes through Lefhoko and Lobutse is outsourced and the contractor started the work on March 04, 2016 and will run for 12 months.

The Jwaneng/Maokane road (32km) which passes through Lefhoko village is also outsourced and the contractor started the work on April 03, 2016 and will run for 12 months.

In the meantime, he said his ministry is not reluctant in maintaining these roads as evidenced by the above mentioned efforts.

Mr Mokaila further said his ministry has opened offices mandated to maintained roads in the Southern District.

The ministry has a roads department regional office in Kanye.

In addition, there are three roads depot offices across the Southern District; being Mabutsane, Kanye and Goodhope depots which facilitate the ministry in their effort to regularly ensure that road network in the district is regularly maintained.

MP Kesupile had asked the minister if he is aware that commercial activities in the south western part of the Kanye South Constituency were seriously impeded by poor conditions of the roads of: Selokolela through Gasita to Lorolwane; Moatle to Sesung; Mosepele through Seherelela, Tsonyane, Lobutse to Lefhoko and Lefhoko to Maokane.

He also wanted the minister to state reasons for his reluctance to finding a permanent solution to regular maintenance of these dirt roads as well as to state his policy towards opening up Southern District to increase social and commercial activities through a network of regularly maintained dirt roads.
