Politeness Seane has made a name for herself in athletics.
The 19-year-old specialises in long distance races, which she started when doing standard seven at Agosi Primary School in Bobonong.
Speaking in an interview, Seane said she had an ankle injury when she was 14 and had to put a pause to athletics.
She then resumed long distance races in 2014 at Bobirwa Secondary School, while doing Form III.
Seane explained that when she started running she was slow and usually got last position, but she did not give up.
It was in 2015 when she started showing improvement in long races, she stated.
The young woman from Bobonong explained that after realising that she could do better, she started training intensively.
The athlete, now sitting for Botswana General Certificate Secondary Examinations at Matshekge Senior School, won bronze in the 4km Botswana Athletics Champions competition in Gaborone last year.
She got another bronze medal in the 10km Bosele Marathon in Selebi Phikwe.
In October last year, the athlete also obtained a silver medal in the 10km Kgale Classic Marathon and scooped gold medal in the 5km during Botswana Games.
On her quest to pursue her athletic dream, she ran the cross country marathon in February 2015, and qualified for the Southern Junior Championships (SJC).
At the SJC in Zambia in June this year, she earned position four in the 800m and 1000m.
She continued to raise the country’s flag high as she participated in the 21kilometres in Antananarivo in Madagascar where she took position 13 to obtain a certificate of appreciation.
“All it takes is passion, there is nothing more pleasurable than doing something you really like”, she said.
Among a list of races, Seane also participated in the 5km Mmadinare Christmas Race and got a bronze medal and attained gold in the 2016 BISA games.
The athlete said she derived motivation from her mother who has always believed in her.
“My mother is the reason why I never gave up in athletics but she encourages me to take my academics even more serious”, she said. She also added that the physical drive she got from her coach also kept her going. ENDS
