02 Nov 2016

Southern District councillors have elected Mr Alec Seametso the new chairperson during a special meeting held in Kanye yesterday.

Mr Seametso who hitherto was the deputy chairperson rose to the position after it fell vacant when Mr Mephato Reatile was specially elected a member of parliament on October 27.

Mr Seametso was unopposed while members of the opposition did not field a contestant for the position.

Mr Thamiso Chabalala was also elected deputy council chairperson during the same meeting.

The position was held by Mr Seametso previously. Before the election, Mr Chabalala was the Kanye Administrative Authority (KAA) deputy chairperson.

In his acceptance remarks, Mr Seametso vowed to serve the district to the best of his ability in the face of limited resources.

He encouraged councillors and public officers to pull together in one direction in an effort to serve Batswana adding that only unity of purpose could take them far as a district.

He emphasised that the role of a councillor was to serve the community.

Mr Seametso thus advised councillors to come up with community development initiatives and innovations they would be remembered for even long after they were gone.

“Bring motions to be deliberated here for the betterment of the communities you represent, my office is always open for all of you,” he said.

He furthermore warned councillors to brace themselves for hard work during his tenure in office.ENDS
