A six-member light classical versatile troupe from India, gave out a unique performance in Gaborone recently.

The group came to Botswana, courtesy of the Indian High Commission in collaboration with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR).

The group, which performed in the Indian classic music concert, was led by Shaila Hattangadi and other members, Shobhana Rao, Nirmala Jaishankar Bondal, Arun Gulwadi, Mihir Kumar Basu and Ashish Mishra, proving their uniqueness that they could perform a wide repertoire of solos, duets and choruses.

While officiating at the event, the Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sport and Culture Development, Thapelo Olopeng said performance of such a nature did not only entertain, but provided opportunities for people to appreciate, respect each other’s culture and further reinforce their relationships.

“I am told that tonight’s performance showcases India culture. As the minister responsible for culture development, I am thoroughly impressed that this communication continues to preserve its culture and identity,” he said.

He said Botswana has cultural exchanges with many countries including India, adding that in 1997 and 2007, the two countries signed a cultural exchange agreement and the program for cultural corporation.

“This agreement has made it possible for the two countries to help each other in matters of culture,” he said.

He further stated that just recently, the Thapong Visual Arts Centre hosted Indian Arts Exhibition where artists from Botswana learned new techniques in translating one’s culture into fine art.

Olopeng said he was aware that through cultural exchange, the Indian High Commission through ICCR has sponsored 17 of Botswana students to pursue under graduate and PHD Studies in artistic and cultural disciplines at various Universities.

“Your creativity, innovation and investment are most welcome to help us deal with problems facing the youth such as unemployment,” he said.ENDS
