Makgato decries poor facilities
25 Oct 2016
Member of Parliament for Sefhare/Ramokgonami, Ms Dorcas Makgato has raised a concern about the boarding facilities at Mokobeng Junior Secondary School.
Ms Makgato said something must be done urgently to address the accommodation of boarding students at the school.
She said this during her tour of the constituency to get first-hand information on issues that are normally raised in kgotla meetings.
During the tour of the hostels, Ms Makgato was informed about inadequate bathrooms for girls and boys, which has resulted in some of the students bathing outside.
Ms Makgato, who is also the Minister of Health and Wellness, observed that the students sleep in the congested dilapidated caravans.
The school head, Mr John Sejoe said the school needs a student’s common room for laundry purposes.
He also informed the MP that the electric pots used in the kitchen have proven to be unreliable because of their continuous break downs which in most cases interrupt learning.
Mr Sejoe said the laboratory construction in his school, being carried out under the Economic Stimulus Programme (ESP) had been delayed, adding that the available one was inadequately equipped.
He also said they had written and communicated a report on plumbing and electricity defects noticed on the newly handed staff housing.
Mr Sejoe complained about breakdowns of street lights and lights in some of the hostel rooms.
Teachers in some schools complained about about shortage of accommodation, classrooms and desks for students, while some pleaded with government to build administration blocks in their schools.
Ms Makgato however said that she would take their concerns to the relevant ministries for urgent attention.
She said she was worried about the defaults on the newly handed staff houses. ENDS
