Maths Science key to innovation
25 Oct 2016
Students of Keng, Sekoma and Khonkhwa primary schools have been encouraged to take Maths and Science seriously as these subjects are key to innovation.
Speaking during Maths and Science fair for the three schools held in Keng on Friday, former president of Mathematics Association of Botswana, Mr Mompati Onkabetse informed the students that Maths and Science was a gateway to developments since the world and the way of life is entirely based on innovation ideas found through Maths and Science.
He added that since Maths and Science have shaped the way of life, students should see that as an opportunity to work hard which would subsequently yield innovative ideas thereby improving the economy and the standing of the country in international stages of Maths and Science.
“This country needs innovators and you are our hope because you live in a world of technology. It will be such a thrill to use a certain technological product made from this country but for that to happen we need you to work hard on your Maths and Science with enthusiasm and purpose,” he said.
Mr Onkabetse challenged the students to use available programmes such as free scholarship programmes that the government had put in place for students excelling in Maths and Science.
He said that such programmes were available for everyone regardless of their geographical standing hence they should not belittle themselves as they were just as qualifying as their counterparts in towns and cities.
He also urged them to aim to own developments in their communities saying that for a long time the country had been dependent on innovative ideas from developed countries while citizens were capable of being innovative but were not determined to see their ideas turn into reality.
Mr Onkabetse encouraged parents to support their children and teachers explaining that education was like a three legged pot and their lack of input would only fail all the efforts by teachers and students.
He also encouraged teachers to go an extra mile in encouraging, supporting and teaching their students because the economy and innovation of the country depends on teachers and their mentorship of future innovators.
The fair was held under the theme “Excellent Foundation in Maths and Science; a Key for Academic Excellence as Botswana Turns 50 years’. ENDS
