Orientation good for personal educational development
20 Oct 2016
Khuduga Primary School head, Ms Maggie Mckenzie, has encouraged parents to enroll children aged five and half years into the standard one orientation programme,.
Ms Mckenzie was speaking during a parents-teachers orientation meeting on October 17.
She explained that the standard one orientation programme prepared children for primary school.
“Since the programme’s inception in 2013, we have seen great improvement and results in the pupils’ personal and education development,” said MsMckenzie who attributed the programme’s success to the input of both dedicated parents and teachers.
That withstanding, Ms McKenzie said the programme was formulated as a complimentary, after realisation that deliberate decisions were made to have children begin school at the age of six and cognitive of the fact that the modernised curriculum surpassed their age.
Ms Mckenzie further enlightened parents on the objectives and activities that children were trained on.
The list included social & environmental interaction, pre-reading activities, which developed motor skills and confidence in children.
Adding on, Ms McKenzie noted that pupils learnt daily life skills such as using the restrooms, personal cleanliness and played educational games that instilled in them social and communication skills.
She stated that pupils were developed on the four basic learning skills of listening, reading, speaking and writing.
“For a child to be able to obtain great results, they should be well developed on the four basic learning skills. Then we say that child is completely developed and well rounded. They can now break through standard one, three and five which are considered hard rocks to crack within the ten year term curriculum.” Ms Mckenzie said.
She advised parents to desist from rushing children to start school early, before being fully developed, noting that the current curriculum had continuity.
She likened a child’s education to a three legged pot which encompasses the child, parent and teacher in order to achieve positive results.
She continued to express that secondary school curriculum was a continuation from primary therefore it was integral.
Registration for the programme started in June every year and the orientation commenced in October just after the primary school leaving examination.
Ms Mckenzie informed the parents that, the strategic plan was to ensure transfer and sharing of the limited resources available.
Furthermore, Ms Mckenzie emphasised the need for parents and teachers to work hand in hand to achieve overall wellbeing of a child as they are regarded as the future leaders.
She said at the end of the orientation, the school plans to host a graduation ceremony organised by parents and teachers, but individuals and companies who wish to offer a helping hand on this gesture for a good cause, they are welcome. ENDS
