20 Oct 2016

Public transport operators in Maun have been encouraged to be cautious of their health and ensure public safety on roads.

A senior health officer from the District Health Management Team (DHMT), Mr Keboutlwetse Kwambala said this during the transport awareness campaign organised by the Ministry of Transport and Communications in Maun.

Mr Kwambala said public transport operators should do regular tests for ailments to know the appropriate action to take to remain fit as well as eat healthy diet, engage in regular exercises and maintain a good posture.

As custodian of people, public transport operators ought to be physically, socially and psychologically fit, adding that some operators were susceptible to stress and financial instability yet they made a lot of money.

Mr Kwambala encouraged the attendees to make use of professional financial advisors to manage their expenses well.

He appreciated the awareness campaign saying it was a noble initiative which brought health and financial experts closer to the public transport operators since they rarely had free time to seek such assistance.

In his remarks, the Taxi Association representative Mr Dimpho Tshomane also appreciated the campaign, saying it was worthwhile that operators were recognized as an important contributor to the economy.

He however encouraged fellow men and women of the industry to desist from corrupt practices such as transporting criminals and smuggled goods.

Mr Tshomane said it was imperative to build a clean record as taxi operators by fighting corruption and reporting such activities.

He implored the Ministry of Transport and Communications to continue hosting such campaigns.

The public transport operators were provided with disease screening services and financial services at the Maun Bus rank. ENDS
