Former Salajwe Primary School teachers and those from Lempu secondary gathered on October 15 to donate gifts that will be used during the the primary school’s prize giving ceremony.

Giving background on the birth of the idea, one of the former teachers, Mr Martin Keabona said most of them came to Salajwe young on their first appointment.

“When we came here the area was still very rural with no much developments such as transport, shops and modes of communication, so boredom was so high that it could drive one, especially a young person like us then, to live in stress,” he said.

He said it was then that they decided to form social teams mostly made up of civil servants as a way of killing boredom and that from then life in the village became easier and this taught them that working together as a people could make life easier.

“This then made us realise that in life people should always work together and this led to us agreeing as former teachers to put back to the area that taught us this basic aspects of life; unity, hence the resolution to unite and assist the two school on an annual basis,” he said.

He said last year they assisted Lempu secondary school and that they would alternate the two school on an annual basis. Mr Keabona said the assorted presents they bought will be used to award best performing students in various subjects during the prize giving ceremony.

Apart from the presents, Mr Keabona also presented the school with a P10 000 cheque from Utility Power Botswana, a local company that desired to assist with the purchasing of an industrial photocopier.

Mr Keabona, however, said the company was new and could not afford the machine as it costs around P50 000.

But the agreement was that the school would raise the deficit to buy the machine.

For his part, Salajwe Primary School head, Mr Dick Ramontshonyane appreciated the teachers for their effort, saying although the donation is modest, it should be celebrated as it was done with love and great purpose.

He said the gesture also indicated that the former teachers still live the Vision 2016 pillars, and hoped that the assistance will not be the last one as the donors know the needs of the school as its former teachers. ENDS
