Botswana Police Service Commissioner, Mr Keabetswe Makgophe has encouraged Mr Mogomotsi Moitlakgola to face life with a positive mind and determination.
Speaking at an event to handover a prosthetic leg to Mr Moitlakgola in Molepolole recently, Mr Makgophe said there was hope that the leg would usher new hope, courage, support and some form of independence in his life.
Mr Moitlakgola, who is living with disability, lost his leg when he was doing standard three.
He is a former student of Sedumedi Junior Secondary School and funds to purchase the prosthetic leg were made possible by donations from among others teachers and students as well as members of the Botswana Police Service.
Bamalete Lutheran Hospital principal prosthetic orthotic officer encouraged parents of children living with disabilities not to hide them, highlighting that disability was not inability.
Dr Sitali Sitali thanked everyone who contributed in raising funds towards Mr Moitlakgola prosthetic leg.
He said there were many disabled children who need help and parents should not be ashamed of them as they could get help just like Mr Moitlakgola did.
He continued to explain that when he was first told about Mr Moitlakgola’s condition he was willing to do the best he could to help.
Meanwhile Sedumedi junior school head, Ms Roselyn Bahumi said they started raising funds for Mr Moitlakgola in 2013 when he was still a student at Sedumedi Junior Secondary School.
He explained that the plan was to donate the prosthetic leg before end of October that year.
Ms Bahumi said they were given a quotation of P30 000 at Gaborone Private Hospital, adding that they went back to raise the money but when they were ready to go back to pay the bill, it was now higher by a hundred thousand pula.
Moreover, Ms Bahumi said they heard that Bamalete Luthern Hospital in Ramotswa was cheaper that’s when they opted to get help there.
She said they ended up paying forty one thousand for Mr Moitlakgola’s prosthetic leg.
“The road was not easy, we got discouraged on the way but despite all that we never gave up and I’m glad we persevered,” she added.
Mr Moitlakgola’s mother, Ms Gopolang Moitlakgola expressed appreciation towards all who contributed in raising money for Mogomotsi’s prosthetic leg.
She explained that she would have not done it by herself as she doesn’t have that kind of money.
Furthermore, Ms Moitlakgola said her son lost his leg when he was doing standard three.
She said they were now looking at the new Mogomotsi.
For his part, Mr Moitlakgola said he was happy with the gesture that the school and all the stakeholders showed towards him.
Mr Moitlakgola said he would now be able to do all the work he was not able to do before receiving the prosthetic leg. ENDS
