Food security essential

16 Oct 2016

The ever changing climatic conditions call for enhanced farming methods.
Speaking during the commemoration of World Food Day at Adam’s Apple Farm in Mochudi on October 13, Vice President Mr Mokgweetsi Masisi said since the agricultural sector was reliant on climate conditions, there was need to accommodate changes in weather patterns.
He said the population increase in the country and around the world also called for effective farming methods that would produce crops that were enough to feed people.
Vice President Masisi said the government has made efforts to support the agricultural sector, but that there was need for an analysis of the support to establish if progress has been made to achieve what was envisaged.
Mr Masisi, who is also the Member of Parliament for Moshupa-Manyana, noted that a lot still has to be done to improve food security in the country.
He said the Food and Agriculture Organisation, which is commemorating its 70th anniversary, plays a critical role in helping the agricultural sector with methods and techniques in farming for better production.
He implored farmers to utilise government offices to find all the necessary information on farming so that they could understand good farming methods.
The Vice President also urged farmers to help with ideas on how they could improve food security in the country.
He pointed out that with the exception of the beef industry, agriculture produce was still low, adding that it forces the government to import some food items.
He said in an effort to enhance food production, the government, through the Economic Stimulus Programme (ESP), would construct roads to agriculture economic zones so that farmers could easily reach their farms. ENDS
