1973 treaty guides repair of border
13 Oct 2016
Repair of the border fence between South Africa and the south eastern part of Botswana along Balete tribal territory is guided by the boundary treaty of 1973 which among others specifies how the cost sharing between the two countries will be undertaken.
The Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Ms Botlogile Tshireletso has told Ntlo Ya Dikgosi on Wednesday (October 12) that to this end, a proposal has been sent to South Africa for consideration of the necessary joint repairs.
She added that the border fence will therefore be repaired once an agreement has been reached with South Africa.
Ms Tshireletso stated that consultation with South Africa was made in February 2016.
Kgosi Mosadi Seboko of Balete had asked for an update on the progress regarding plans to repair the border fence between South Africa and the south eastern part of Botswana along Balete tribal territory as the fence is porous and aiding cross border crime. ENDS
