Twin brothers make waves in Molepolole
13 Oct 2016
With only a year in the music industry as DJs, 22-year-old twin brothers Kabo and Kabonyana Tumedi already seem to be many’s favourite in their native home village of Molepolole.
Dee’s Twins, as they are popularly known on stage, formally entered the music industry in 2015, but had started deejaying when they were doing form three in 2011.
“A lot of our friends always told us that we should take deejaying to another level, but we had our doubts until we met our manager, Bakang Garebatho who sat us down and convinced us of our potential,” they said.
The twins said that was when Garebatho booked their first ever performance at Mr and Miss Botho 2015 where their performance took revellers by storm, hence formally marking the genesis of their journey in the industry.
With them being so identical, one would be confused if they met either in the street something they believed attracted interests from their followers.
“We believe that people love us mostly because we are so identical, something that they do not experience often. We also deliver great performance and keep our audience on their toes,” they said.
The duo played mostly house music and believed their song selection set them apart from the rest.
“What makes us different is how we select our songs and try by all means to play songs people won’t expect to hear like old school tunes. This is because we have realised that most DJs play popular and currently trending tunes,” said Kabo.
They deejaying needed passion and determination for one to make it in the industry because the financial reward was not that much, something that could demoralise.
“Promoters are not willing to pay us for our performances. They always claim we are getting exposure at their shows. That may be the case, but at the end of the day we need to eat, have transport and even invest in our brand so I just wish local promoters could consider these factors every time they make bookings,” lamented Kabonyana.
The duo has performed in big shows like O Motho ka Batho music festival which was held at Molepolole Stadium, the Unite Pens Down and Miss Baisago just to mention a few.
“These bookings came after people saw us perform. We are unique and will continue maintaining the standard we have set for ourselves,” they said.
Having shared the stage with the likes of DJ Chrispin the drummer, DJ Kuchi, DJ Chabo and Vee Mampeezy, the duo still take Black Coffee as their inspiration and want to see themselves reaching similar heights.
It is evident that government through the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sport and Culture Development has come guns blazing to help improve and support the entertainment industry in Botswana.
“Our Minister Thapelo Olopeng is really interactive and is willing to help the music industry grow. We are blessed as a country to have a minister like him,” they both said. ENDS
